The Individual and Society unit looks at the relationship between individual identities and society as a whole. It covers the following material:
The building blocks of sociology (these can be found in Sociology Basics):
- Values, norms & agents of socialisation
- How people learn their social roles and how their behaviour is regulated by society
- Social theories – functionalism, Marxism, feminism, interactionism
You need to make sure you have a solid understanding of the basics, if you do not this will show in your answers and you will not be able to gain a high grade. Your sociological understanding will also be drawn upon in your other two units.
The material that your exam questions will focus on
- Gender identities & gender socialisation
- National identities, institutions & the formation of national identities
- Ethnic identities & their impact on social behaviour
- Class identities & their impact on social behaviour
- Contemporary social change & its impact on the above
